A Bench and its Communities

My project investigates hostile architecture in my hometown of Bexhill. I map out a field of concern by seeing a poor design choice for the Bexhill benches, which impacted the homeless community by restricting their behaviour and prohibiting them from sleeping on the bench. I wanted to redesign this armrest so it could be more inclusive to the community of Bexhill, so these pieces of architecture are more accessible to a larger array of people which offers better support to get people up and down whilst sitting on the benches as well as fewer restrictions on each size of bench divider. This concept I created offers a design that has movability to benefit most users, this includes the armrest being able to move in a 90-degree position allowing more flexibility. The project led me to find a local homeless charity “Warming up the Homeless” where I worked in collaboration with the staff, working in their marketing department. This allowed me to produce publications such as posters, and leaflets aimed at boosting volunteers and donations to help support the homeless community in Bexhill and surrounding communities so they can continue to support them in the future.
