Celebrating Body Hair

What is body hair?

What is a natural body?

How can we represent it?

If you have ever spent time in V&A Museum, you will notice the wide variety of arts that portrayed human figures. Among these fascinating artworks, the statues displayed in the hall have drawn my attention. Sculpture of the human, as an art form that captures the essence of the beauty and nature of the human body, has revealed the demand for hairlessness. Most female statues are complete without body hair. Throughout history, body hair has been stigmatized by society. The hair below a female's head is dismissed as dirty, unnatural, unattractive, and unfeminine. Having smooth and hairless skin is a feminine ideal. People have forgotten body hair is a natural part of our body. The female body does have a texture other than smoothness, is covered with hair, is rough, and is unrestricted.

Therefore, I made a hairy dress and a coloring book. By creating this dress, I want to put body hair back on the statues in V&A Museum. With this coloring book, the public can explore the beauty of hair and have opportunities to have a conversation about it.
