DO YOU FEAR?

DO YOU FEAR is a project about the discussion, analysis and understanding of human fears. Why are we afraid? What are we afraid of? Is it an emotion, or a simple biological response? In addressing fear as a concept, it is inevitable that how we avoid things which imbue fear within us must also be examined. The ritualisation of these actions is what constitutes DO YOU FEAR. Objects created during the duration of this project - whether an individual or collective effort - become effigies; to be burnt or destroyed in symbolic punishment, a way of “releasing” the fear. The repetition of ritual conversation with participative individuals, creation of effigies, culminating in the act of burning these objects, is a cyclical motion that is the core of this project. It is about curating the fearscape, an ever-changing log of collective societal opinion and influence, and understanding that sometimes - in its abstraction - fear cannot be understood. As such, I strive to curate a museum of fears - both physical and digital - reflective of societal structure and the frayed relationship we have with ourselves. The physicality of the museum itself changes with every iteration as, unlike a typical museum, it exists mostly via documentation, the catalogue, and virtually. This allows for anyone who either wishes to view or participate in the project to be privy to an [artistic] type of data set of fears, a direct reflection on the state of people's mindsets as well as societal trends, avoidances and issues. As such, the objects displayed in this publication are only a small fractional example of DO YOU FEAR as a whole. So to conclude, I ask you: what do you fear?
