SEE

SEE talks about the invisible, unsustainable and unethical design of our cities. A series of projections on different buildings in London reveals how we mis-prioritise Society, Economy and the Environment.

Global data in real-time and accompanying animations were displayed overnight in parts of the city that contribute to its overall unsustainability. The three interventions highlight how housing, transport and waste management are designed around economic interests, without accounting for their societal and environmental implications. The project aims to raise awareness by unveiling how our capitalist culture has influenced the design of our urban landscapes. Our thirst for profit and alienation from nature has blinded us to the impact
we are leaving on our planet. I argue against the most common theory about sustainable development, stating that there would be no economy without a society and there can be no society without an environment, therefore, we should design our cities accordingly.

My interventions were carried out in public to inform people of their involuntary contribution to unsustainability, and hopefully shift their values towards more ethical standards. The bigger picture being that our exposure to the world around us influences the way we act and design for future generations. In the long run, projections like mine that create a 'traffic light system' for sustainability would realign priorities and prove that our planet cannot be saved on the basis of profit gain.

The final video combines my projection mappings with timelapses, hyper-lapses and interviews to create a documentarystyle journey through London over three days and nights.
