To Pub or Not to Pub

Through an investigation into the inherent sense of connection and fascination I feel with the British pub, I've created a provocative body of work that looks to enable a space of personal contemplation within the observer. By unpicking the physical, social, and historical fabric of this well-known and loved symbol, my work aims to instigate both internal and external discourse surrounding the role the pub plays in the future of our society.

The topics contained within the dialogue I wish to create, reflect personal concerns of mine that relate to the loss of shared symbolic meaning within design in the post-modern era we currently live in and men's mental health, and they are designed to make the observer question whether the pub is the last remaining artefact from our past keeping our society held together, or whether it's the final obstacle we must let go of before we can progress into 'Modern Britain'. My work is directed towards people who feel a similar sense of attachment to the pub as myself as I believe they are most likely to understand what I'm trying to tap into and they will have felt the repercussions from the unsettling shifts we have seen within the pub sector over the past 30 years.
